In a long, exemplary and impressive social, political and legal career, Sir Anerood Jugnauth, had been the Prime Minister for 18 years and transformed the economic fortunes of Mauritius through his strong leadership skills and farsighted policies.
1930-2021: Sir Anerood Jugnauth was born on 29 March 1930 in Palma and passed away on 03 June 2021. He had his primary education at Palma Primary School and his secondary education at Regent College. In 1951, he left Mauritius for the UK to study law at the Lincoln’s Inn and became a lawyer in 1954.
1957: He started his social and political career in 1957 and in that same year, he was elected President of Palma Village Council.
1963: In October 1963, Sir Anerood Jugnauth was elected for the first time to the Legislative Council of Mauritius. He served as State Minister for Development from 1965 to 1966 and Minister of Labour as from November 1966.
1976-1982: From 1976 to 1982, Sir Anerood Jugnauth served as Leader of the Opposition.
1982-1995 & 2000-2003: He subsequently served as Prime Minister from 1982 to 1995 and again from 2000 to 2003.
2003-2012: He was elected as President of Republic of Mauritius to serve the nation.
2014-2017: Following general elections in the year 2014, he was appointed again to serve his sixth term as Prime Minister until 2017 when he became Minister Mentor.
Honours and Awards
Sir Anerood Jugnauth was the recipient of a number of Honours and Awards. He was knighted Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
II in 1988. The Government of India conferred on him the “Padma Vibhushan” Award on the occasion of India’s Republic Day in 2020.
He is known worldwide as the “Father of the Mauritian economic
miracle” of the eighties.

Mauritius Post Ltd has put measures in place to ensure that surface mail dispatches to Rodrigues occur at least twice a month to minimise disruptions. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this temporary suspension may cause and appreciate your understanding and patience.
