World Post Day History and Significance We are glad to issue a Special Commemorative Cover to celebrate the 50 years of our adhesion to Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1969 as a full-fledged member just after the Independence of Mauritius in 1968. Moreover, it is also important to mark the 50 years of the celebration of World Post Day as proclaimed by UPU Congress in Japan in 1969. On the other hand, it is opportune to mention that 2019 marks the 145th Anniversary of UPU since its creation in 1874 and which then consisted of 22 member countries while today there are 192 member countries who have adhered to UPU. On the other hand, it is opportune to mention that 2019 marks the 145th Anniversary of UPU since its creation in 1874 and which then consisted of 22 member countries while today there are 192 member countries who have adhered to UPU. UPU is the second oldest union in the world after the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and is a recognised United Nations agency. Over the years, UPU has strived to keep pace with a changing world, harnessing new information and communication technologies to further develop efficient and accessible Universal Postal services and communication facilities to one and all. The purpose of World Post Day is to bring awareness among the population on the role of the Post Office in the daily life of the citizens. Besides, the Postal Sector while modernising its postal services, has diversified its activities to various non-postal products and services to maintain its relevance, reliability and viability. “Posts are not only about letters and stamps. They are enablers of inclusive development constituting an essential component on the global economy” as once stated by the Director General of International Bureau. The modern logo of Mauritius Post with the tagline “more than just letters” illustrate these new postal objectives. Stamps The Rs 2 stamp depicts the modernisation of Mauritius Post at counter level where all our Post Offices in Mauritius and Rodrigues are online and real time. The Rs 8 stamp depicts our door-to-door delivery systems towards the population. With the advent of e-commerce MPL is positioning itself to be the favoured partner in the conveyancing of mail items including small packets and parcels. Special Commemorative Cover The Special Commemorative Cover depicts the composite logo received from UPU mentioning the celebration of 50 years of World Post Day and 145 years of UPU and a laurel encapsulating 50 years of the adhesion of Mauritius as a full-fledged member of UPU.
