Description

The First Day Cover of the 250th anniversary of the first newspaper of Mauritius, Annonces, Affiches et Avis divers pour les Colonies des Iles de France et de Bourbon, marks a significant milestone in the history of journalism on the island. Nicolas Lambert de Carré, a prominent figure in Mauritian journalism, played a pivotal role in establishing the publication, which made its debut on January 13, 1773.

The inaugural issue of Annonces, Affiches et Avis divers pour les Colonies des Iles de France et de Bourbon was a modest folio consisting of only 4 pages printed on 2 columns, with a weekly publication schedule, appearing every Wednesday. Lambert’s dedication to disseminating information to the local community through the newspaper laid the foundation for the development of journalism in Mauritius.

Lambert’s pioneering work in Mauritian journalism has not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by the creation of the Nicolas Lambert Prize several decades ago. This prestigious award recognizes and celebrates excellence in local journalism, serving as a testament to Lambert’s enduring legacy in the field. In 2015, the Media Trust revived the Nicolas Lambert Prize, further highlighting the enduring impact of Lambert’s contributions to Mauritian journalism.

The 250th anniversary of the first Mauritian newspaper provides an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of journalism on the island and the profound impact of Lambert’s pioneering efforts. It serves as a reminder of the vital role that journalism plays in informing and shaping society, and the enduring legacy of individuals like Nicolas Lambert de Carré, who laid the groundwork for the journalistic tradition in Mauritius.

Christmas & New Year Mails 2024

Our valued customers are hereby informed that the latest dates of posting of correspondence intended for overseas destinations so as to ensure delivery

before Christmas and New Year are as follows:

Mauritius Post Ltd informs its esteemed customers and the general public that, due to a substantial increase in the volume of air parcels and small packets, combined with limited cargo space on Air Mauritius flights to Rodrigues, the regular daily dispatch of these items has been temporarily suspended.  During this period, priority will be given to EMS services and letter mail, while the transportation of parcels and small packets will be subject to delays. Customers intending to send parcels using Colipost boxes (sizes S, M, L, and XL) are advised to use the sea freight service for shipments to Rodrigues.  We would like to reassure you that all parcels, up to a maximum weight of 10 kg, will continue to be accepted via Surface Mail. Mauritius Post Ltd has put measures in place to ensure that surface mail dispatches to Rodrigues occur at least twice a month to minimise disruptions.  We sincerely regret any inconvenience this temporary suspension may cause and appreciate your understanding and patience. Mauritius Post Ltd remains committed to providing timely updates on the situation as developments unfold.  Thank you for your continued cooperation.
