The Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Hon. Deepak Balgobin; the Chairman of the Mauritius Post Ltd, Mr Ranna Swamber; the Chief Executive Officer of Mauritius Post Ltd, Mr Vijaye Ramchurn; and other personalities were present at the event.

In his address for the occasion, the Minister affirmed that the Mauritius Post Ltd would continue to digitalise its services with the objectives of ensuring it remained a vital force connecting Mauritians while creating a smoother and easier experience for the public. “Efficiency, convenience and innovation are at the heart of the success of the postal services,” he stated.

The Minister thus stressed the necessity for the Mauritius Post Ltd to do away with the traditional method of postal services in a fast-paced world with a view to not only enhancing its relevance but capturing a larger share of the e-commerce market. He indicated that the Mauritius Post Ltd processed some 1.2 million parcels yearly with one million for inland shipping and the rest being outbound shipment.

According to the Minister, the new website together with the app provided an easy-to-use platform that would make it simple for the public to transact with the local postal services from the comfort of their phone. He enumerated the range of activities covered by the app including tracking, in real time, the shipment of packages being processed by the Mauritius Post Ltd; paying for customer charges; and scheduling deliveries, among others.

Moreover, the Minister talked on the investment made by the Mauritius Post Ltd to improve its infrastructure with the opening of new post offices and small parcel posts in malls across the country.

MJ Développement will not only bring its financial support but also its expertise to this project. He has surrounded himself with various construction experts, who will also bring their know-how to the restoration of the Rivière-Noire post office.“As lovers of Mauritius and passionate about real estate and heritage, we felt it our duty to preserve this superb little building which is part of the architectural heritage of Rivière Noire, a region dear to our hearts. This old building is an important landmark in Rivière-Noire and we are proud to play a role in its restoration and to collaborate with this essential institution that is the Mauritius Post Ltd. I would also like to thank our consulting partners, construction professionals, who wanted to work on the project, but also the Mauritius Post Ltd for the confidence it places in us,” said Michaël Ruel, president of MJ Développement.

The post office will thus be relocated a few meters further during the restoration work. This renovation project, which should be completed within three months, will include a total renovation of the exterior (replacement of shingles, identical, etc.). Work on the rock walls must be carried out in order to expose this magnificent emblematic stone of Mauritius. Inside, the electrical system will be brought up to standard, a new floor covering will be put in place, a rehabilitation of the sanitary facilities is also planned. La Poste has planned to redevelop the public work and reception areas.
